District-Wide Reading Program Introduced
Posted on 06/16/2017

Robertson County Schools shared information on the “Ready to Read” initiative at the Chamber of Commerce’s, “Good Morning Robertson County” monthly meeting on Thursday morning, June 15.

Elementary Education Supervisor Melanie Dickerson told the assembled business and community leaders that the new program is a, “[…] district initiative that expands our literacy work to include not only what we do in classrooms daily, but also how to reach families with children beginning at birth.”

Three initiatives that rolled out across the district this past school year were described by educators Tammie Williamson, Kathy Sneed, Cheryl Killebrew, and Gail Thomas.

“Read 20” encourages parents and caretakers to read to a child for 20 minutes each day.

Ready! for Kindergarten” provides training to parents that informs them on the benefits of reading and talking to their young children.

Finally, this past school year, the district piloted a program in which adult volunteers/mentors devoted one hour weekly to visit a district elementary school to read with a student. The district plans to expand this program in the coming year to more schools with the help of additional community volunteers.

Dr. Emily Hollingsworth, Supervisor of Federal Programs for RCS, added that the district is also looking to partner with community members and businesses to provide books and reading assistance through book drives and sponsoring the purchase of additional “Ready! for Kindergarten” training kits and supplies.

The State of Tennessee has set a goal that 75% of all students will demonstrate reading proficiency by the year 2025, and the district expects students to be able reach this goal, in part, through the implementation of the initiatives within the “Ready to Read” campaign.
